Looks to be a compact, obviously - Reason I post is because this is the smallest I have ever seen.
No discernible markings, does appear to be a texture on top side.

Hinge looks in good shape, will likely pop it open to make sure nothing good stashed inside [just the right size for quarter or possibly half]

Yep, I would say old make up compact. I've found several and can't hold back the urge to destroy while opening to see if there is a coin or two inside.
