I took these pictures through the living room window glass. I've never seen one of these birds around here, but I think I've seen them in Nevada around water. The temperature was something like 22 degrees, so the lawn grass is frosted. There were nine Robins on the grass looking for worm sickles, but I don't think they were having much luck. This guy stayed in one place for about 15 minutes, just poking down through the grass, apparently finding something to eat down there.

Yup...the Viking has it right. We have them along our canals here, all summer long. I had a bird here, last week, I'd never seen before. Turned out it was a "Varied Thrush". Unfortunately...no pics.

Rare encounter. My first thought was a Woodcock. Great you had a camera handy. I wouldn't known you took the shot through a window if you hadn't said so.

that bird is normally found near salt water areas ...odd that he /she should be there unless in transit from place to place

I was really surprised that the pictures turned out that good. I used the auto focus feature just far enough back that the lens could move, then once focused I put the lens against the window so there would be no reflection.

Snipe...now you can go snipe hunting. Be sure to take a sack and stick. Just don't HURT the snipe.

It's like ronwoodcraft says. The perfect lighting has a lot about a good photograph. I've been trying to look for that when I take pictures, but some times you just don't have it and you just need to take what you can as that'll be the only opportunity you'll have if you want a picture at all. I've been taking pictures of these Kestrels in the field and so far non have been satisfactory yet for me to post. I get some nice close ups, but the direction of the light just isn't right for any shots to be proud of. I use the auto function almost always, because I'm not confident enough of the functions necessary for using the manual features, plus birds don't wait on me to figure things out. I think this digital age is great and I had no real interest in photography during the age of film. I was handed a camera once at a wedding as the groom said here your the official wedding photographer. I tried to back out, but they all said no anyone can do it, so I said fine I'll do it. Almost all the pictures I took were crap. Heads cut off, out of focus, and too dark. That gave me a bad taste of photography for the longest time as I felt like a real dope after that. That marriage did fail after 3 years, so I guess I didn't screw up some couples whole life together or maybe I did. ???

In Michigan, they are migratory birds..................Woodcock or Timber Doodles, people hunt them............ they eat worms and have meat like liver! yuck.

Those woodcock's are sure a challenge to hit in flight with a shotgun. I've tried before and the few I've seen have always escaped me. Too many trees where they hang out. Personally I love the taste of liver. I had pan fried turkey heart, gizzard and liver for breakfast last thanksgiving morn with my eggs.
