I would guess it is part of an old laundry washer. The laundry would sit in a pot, probably copper, in the top and a fire stoked in the lower section to heat the water.
We had one similar, that sat in the back yard, back in the 50's.

The way things are going with the economy you better hold on to that you may be using it soon. Always cool to find stuff like that. I found an old pot/cauldron had no idea what it was but my grandmother knew. She said was a cauldron of sorts but used to make soap from boiling animal fat. I still have it, reason I have it the thing weighs a ton and nobody want to mess with it.
