what makes a good detector

I know that the electronics matter but how big a role does the coil play. I ask because my coil has a 5 pin din plug on it does this mean any other five pin din plug coil would work on it many thanks.

All you need is a detector that is very accurate on interpreting the signal to give a true value to the screen/headphones. Sound simple, but that is the truth of detectors. Of course a low end detector can do that - sometimes - but a high will do that at a much higher percentage.

They may or may not be interchangable. The detector should be tuned to a coil. Some coils now have chips and propriatary programming that is top secret (as in the Xterra code not being given to SunRay to develop a probe for that line).

What makes a good detector, aside from manufacturing, is that it will serve you without failing after continued used, as long as it's not abused. It's got to be ready to go when you are.

It's a "romantic" reply but inaccurate because an experienced person operating a lemon is not going to make the detector good. First the equipment then the operator.

This is not Romantic at all. You merely need a basic machine--not a hunk of junk or a "lemon." Anything less--and you might be correct, but for a person with a basic decent detector, it IS the user that brings out the best the machine can offer. It took me a long time to realize this--and it was only after a lot of relic hunting.
