I'm not really in to Indian artifacts, but over the winter I was at my folks house in south-central PA and an old neighbor, born and raised in the area, pointed out "the Indian camp" to me.

Local "lore" says the Indians helped dig the millrace for the local lumber & grain mill (built circa 1750). Said they were paid with whiskey and trade goods. The mill location is only about 1/2 mile from the camp location. I also found the millrace dam nearby.

The camp location has been farm/pasture land for the last 200+ years. I feel almost compelled to check this place out, but I have no idea what to look for or how to go about it.

Any advice?

Thanks,

DCMatt

Well the easiest way is to walk with your eyes on the ground. Plowed fields are the easiest, but have the mos damage. After a heavy rain, I walk the woods or look for bankings that have no grass them, looking for pieces poking out of the dirt. Alot of times you will just see the edge, but when you pull it out and there is a whole point, you will be addicted to yet another hobby.

I touch every "rock" I see, if just briefly. How does it feel in your hand, what could it have been used for?

Alot of these folks look in streams, and can give much better advice. Take a cruise through some of the posts in here and get a feel for what you are looking for.

Good luck in your new adventure, beware.......it will get into your blood!

Matt, This is from a old post...

How you find such arrows? Tell as it is necessary to search for them

Our property is located on a river, one area was a garden spot that has produced Indian artifacts for over 125 yrs. The other area (cow pasture) was just discovered to have artifacts. We subsoiled lightly waited on a rain, subsoiling brings them to the top & the rains washes away the dirt. Too heavy of a rain will cover them more, a light rain will expose them better. Walking very slowly, eyeball the ground before each step, & keep those eyes on the ground at all times. Immediately after the rain the artifacts seem to glisten, but you need to walk & look so your shadow does not interfere.

Matt, if you can detect around the old mill. you could
possibly dig up some Artifacts(Indian) along with any metal
that you find.

Fossis.................
