what would be the best thing to mark bottles with??? i am cataloging my bottles, and would like to mark them with something that will not hurt them but will remain on a long long time. i thought of fingernail polish but started thinking it may flake off. possibly my kids and grandkids will pick up on bottle collecting, inherit mine, and know where exactly i aquired them from.
thanks in advance!!!!!

I've seen pics where people have put something white on the embossing so it could be read in the pics...maybe soap like a car dealer does on windshields?

I use multi purpose labels

I don't really know too much about bottle collecting, so this is only a suggestion.
These industrial type pens will mark on just about anything, and are very durable. Also, I'm sure the markings could be easily removed later with some type of solvent without hurting the bottles...
Here's a link to show you the type I am talking about:

P.S.> I just clicked on the link to make sure it was working right, and noticed the price they have listed for them...
Price: $151.20,,, Not sure if that is a misprint, or what, but I'm sure you can find them much cheaper than that...
I used to use the heck out of them when fabricating with metal...

Wal-mart sells "painters pencils" in the arts and crafts section.I use the white and black ones to highlite the lettering on the front of bottles.I have also used them to right ID on the bottoms of bottles. You can also use a sharpie.

dixie that bottle in your avatar is fantastic. What do you guess it's worth?

sounds good, but they wont harm or devalue the bottles right????

Use a permanent Sharpie. It won't harm the bottle and can be removed with acetone. It would be great for your descendants to have the bottles marked...great idea! But remember, the computer disk you put the info on may become obsolete in time. Also, paper will become brittle, so get some ARCHIVAL QUALITY printer paper and print out your lists. Then put them into archival quality (non-acidic) clear sleeves and make a copy of everything. Put one copy in a place that is easy to access so you can update your lists and put the other in a safe or safe deposit box.

I would go with your first thought...clear finger nail polish...Its very durable and shouldnt come off unless bottles are handled repeativly and then Im still not sure it will come off as I ve never seen that happen. If you decide to remove it , simple polish remover will restore it to original finish. I use a white milk pencil and let it dry then use a clear polish...works for me..also works great on indian arrowheads and artifacts.
