Hey everyone, i just wanted to introduce myself. I'm found this site not to long ago and i went from coin roll hunting enthusiast to Metal Detecting. I recently just bought my first MD http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,435716.0.html (Big thanks to the members who helped) and once i set it up, i went to my back yard and i was hooked!! I'll be posting pictures up tomorrow but this is what i found in my backyard


My First Backyard Find

2 Silver Quarters 1945 and 1941
4x Buffalo Coins 3 with no dates 1 dated 1936
1x US 5 Cent coin the date is 1822!! *has a small hole in it, i think someone might have tried to make this a necklace*

Welcome Chicago guy! Nice job on your first hunt! Holes were usually because the old coins were stiched to the inside of clothing as well as probably necklaces. Can't wait to see the pictures because I can't find an 1822 5 cent or half dime in my coin book.

find one listed in my US coin book.

Excellent recoveries there and welcome to TNet!

"Most" of the time early holed coins were sewn into clothing and then cut off
when needed. If you're finding that kind of early coinage in your yard, check out
your local library in the geneology section to see what kind of early maps they
might have of your area.

Also, check out "HistoricAerials.com" on-line to see photos of your location
from 1939 to present.

Welcome.
Those are some good first finds to keep you motivated. Particularly the half-dime though the date may be 1832? as said 1822, they weren't minted. Hard to find much earlier in this area.

Well they did make a 1822 5 dollar gold coin. Similar to a nickel in size, but that would be only the fourth one known to exist in which case you just made a bunch of new best friends for life!

Hey guys, I just got settled in from work. I was planning to go MDing today at the park seeing that it rained (the store owner where i bought my MD said its better to MD after it rains because of the soil) but it looks like casino raider bob beat me to it! lol, their is a section of my yard that i didnt get because the MD keeps going off like crazy i just don't know what to dig, so i'm just gonna dig it all at this point i feel a rush when i find anything! Any find is a good find unless it pure garbage heh.

I was going to get the pics up with my cybershot but when my SD is no where to be found, so ill have to get another one. In the mean time i managed to take pics with my phone as best as i could. Let me know what you guys think!

your right it could be 1882, its aged so i cant really tell exactly but im almost sure its a 1882 now, also does anyone know how i can make my pictures smaller?

thanks! yea i cleaned them pretty good, I used water and alcohol and a toothbrush as a scrubber.

You can always open the pictures up in the windows paint program and select all under the edit menu, then go to tools and select stretch/skew and reduce the number on both horizontal and vertical axis by 50% or so, if you are not familiar with any other image editors you have.

You have a yard worthy of the Casino Raider himself! Go get 'em!

Those nickels are in awesome shape! I love shield nickels! That style was minted from 1867-1883 and are worth a minimum of $20 in good condition. Its a variety 2 shield nickel without rays. Good job!
