Hi Badger and everyone else, I now live mostly in the UK and I want to start detecting again slowly but I am serious. Thanks for all the information as on the 19th of September Jan and I are going to the states for a couple weeks and I thought I would drop in on Chuck Clevenger in Kansas City and get me a detector so any input I can get before I leave on trip is appreciated. Bill
Hey, Bill--
First, make sure that Clevenger handles Tesoro brand.
Next, figure out a head of time what kind of hit to your pocketbook the Import / Export taxes might be when you leave the US and declare when reentering UK. Go to the Tesoro website and check if there's any authorized dealers in the UK. There were at one time. Go to
www.tesoro.com .
I just checked. There's a place called Treasure World in London that is on their dealers list.
Now, as to which machine to get---I strongly suggest that you get one that has manual ground-balance. I've heard and read that the British Isles can have some seriously mineralized soils. With MANUAL ground balance you will KNOW that the detector is working at peak. With an automatic ground balancing circuit, you might be "skunked" on finding goodies. I read a field report on Tesoro's website that was submitted by a user in Britain concerning the Tejon that was quite positive. Also, the Vaquero is another excellent choice. While at the Tesoro website, check out the field reports on their different models.
I have an older Bandido II with manual ground balance that is fantastic and a new DeLeon with the auto ground balancing circuit for my "lazy" days. Besides, where I live ( in Mississippi ) the native soils are pretty "sweet"; so that auto circuit works just fine.
Good luck in what ever you decide. Tesoro detectors are most excellent in operation and quality. And they are very light weight. They might just be the lightest ones available.
