Back in the the late 1700's to the 1800's there were 2 main fashion types, 1) the Dandies and 2) the Maccaronies. The Dandy was also known as a Beau, after Beau Brummel. The main difference was the peacock flamboyance of the Maccaroni (macaroni) compared to the somewhat sombre classy appearance of the Dandy, both utilized buttons but the macaroni's were bigger and, typically, more highly decorated. Interestingly, the part in Yankee Doodle " stuck a feather in his hat and called it maccaroni" comes from the time. Here are a few links that explain it a lot better than I have Macaroni (fashion) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dandy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Beau Brummell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
