What year could this old USA nickle be?

Found this old USA nickle today during by 30 minute hunt after work. I can't find a date on it. The back of the coin is hard to make out. The front of the coin has a large 5 on it and circling the 5 are 13 stars. Any information would be very appreciated! Thank you

Your nickel doesn't have rays between the stars so we can tighten the age range one more year--to between 1867 and 1883.

The 1867, '68 and '69 dates are the most common (based on mintage). The rarest ones found in circulation are dated 1879, 1880,1881 and 1883 (over 2). Check with eBay under 'shield nickels' then "Current Listings" to get current sales data.
