Re: what's a simple way to determine coin/ring/relic depth with a vaquero?

The simplest way is the same old way for all non-metered detectors. Raise the coil as you "X" the target. If the target sound stops as the coil gets just a couple of inches above the surface / grasstops, then the target is deep. If you keep getting the sound all the way up to where the coil is 10 inches or so above the ground, the target is very shallow.

This is a loose guide that depends on air tests results. This is the ONLY use I put air tests to; to get a ROUGH idea of the distances the detector will sense each test target. That is the approx. distances I visualize as I'm raising the coil above the ground's surface. This technique also allows you to pinpoint the target.

What shortstack said works pretty good as I use the same technique even for metered machines too.

Here is one more tip for you too;
If your the same height as your knee cap or higher you can bet it will be a crushed beer can or coffee can and other large items. Once you have done it a few times you will kind of get the hang of it and you will probably use it quite often, Tim

I forgot one point. If your machine has an "Auto Tune" setting and you're using it; the size of the target will continually get smaller until it's discriminated out. My older Bandido II has a switch to select Normal or Auto Tune. You NORMALLY don't have to worry about this situation as long as you don't waste a bunch of time "X-ing" the target while you're lifting the coil. As mentioned by bigtim, above, you'll pick up this technique quickly and it'll all become second nature. If you think the target is a large one, bring the coil in to the target area from several different directions until the detector sounds off. Mark that point at each swing and you'll outline the target's basic shape (size). This little "tool" works a little bit better in All Met. It'll tell you right off the bat if the target is a trash can lid, flattened can, or a more promising item. If you're coinshooting, it'll save you a bunch of time. If you're relic hunting;..........well, good luck. :laughing7:

thanks so much for the replies....going to be a lot to learn but you're all helping me to shorten the learning curve! thanks again. dan in so cal

The above suggestions are great. Time with your detector and you'll be surprised how quickly you start to learn your detector. Have fun, you have picked a great detector. :icon_thumright:
