What's the best way to clean finds?

Not sure if this is where I need to ask this question I'm kind of new to the forum but what's the best way to clean super old rare relics/finds that have a lot of mineral build up on them? I fear if I go with a strong method I will destroy the relic. So what's you guys thoughts?
