It is an antique version of ornamentation for use on thick leather. It consists of a "cupped" thin brass shell for the front, filled with either lead or solder, which holds the brass or copper wires for attachment to the leather. Used on everything from saddlery to luggage to leather-covered furniture. Can date anywhere from the 1700s (or perhaps somewhat earlier) into the early 20th-Century. In my opinion, they were most frequently used in the 1800s.

I have found many items that look like the OP's, except filled with lead. Now I know what they are! Thanks!

I found around three filled with lead at a site dating between 1730-1800.
