What's this?

This was found on the beach sometime ago.Looks like some kind of mini-dark brown clam.I've tried prying this thing open with everything short of a hammer. It won't and I don't want to break it.The photo doesn't do any justice. It seems like its almost like a tortoise shell type of substance. It definitely opened at one time or another, but it's sealed tight now.The 1894 nickel is just a sizing reference.

Re: What's this?

I grew up living on the beach and have seen hundreds of these. We use to call them "sea beans". Not exactly sure if it's some kinda seed or something.

I knew Omni would pull thru, he's definitly Mr. Research!!!!

Re: What's this?

I have lived on the west coast my whole life, never seen a "sea bean" before, but a quick search revealed this site: http://www.seabean.com

Everything you wanted to know about 'Sea Beans' but were afraid to ask!

You guys on the east coast have all the luck, except in winter!

Can you dig it?
