What's up with this?

I'm in navada for the winter, set up at the Avi casino, and a few spaces down is seger98. Well, we have been going together, and one of the spots is just north of the bridge in Laughlin, on the Colorado river while the river is low, we were hunting the beach area. We had permission from the from the ranger station where you pay for your day use pass. I even saw a ranger drive by us while hunting. A customer came in yesterday, who just started, and had some questions about how to use the discrimination on her machine, during the conversation, I had mentioned that we were hunting that ares, and she said that she and her husband had gone there, and not long, a ranger stopped her and said that she couldn't do that. He took her license and ran a check to see if she had any metal detecting offences anywhere else! I don't know, seems kind of wierd to me. Has that happened to anyone else? I will check into it further, that spot yielded more quarters than anything else, besides lead sinkers. We need to finish hunting it out. It would be a shame to only hunt half of it.

"metal detecting offenses"....wow, i can't believe that. when i go detecting i get the most unbelievable stares sometimes. people look at me like i'm the most criminal, wife beating, child molester, weirdo that ever walked the earth. if i had a rake in my hand they wouldn't think nothing, but as soon as i pick up a metal detector, what is that idiot doing!!!!

I get the stangest looks too. A little kid asked her dad what was i doing. He told her I was using radar to find treasure. Radar! HAHA

Not a clue what particular laws they may have in AZ, but I think I might have clues about the "metal detecting offenses."

Therre are ancient indian sites throughout AZ and NM where people have grabbed pottery and other items for a hundred years or so. Some earned a living at it, and other desert foraging activities.

Most recently the sites have been declared preserves and it is illegal to remove artifacts.
More than a few people have been arrested, fined, and jailed.
They are very serious about it.

Someone with a metal detector is most likely considered in that same lot by some enforcement personnel.
A lotta folks carry firearms in AZ, so be cautious in encounters with enforcement.
They are never sure of what they are up against.

It's like a new pub... find out what's going on before you get too frisky!

People tend to judge what they don't understand. I also get looks, like I'm some kind of scavenger, scraping for change for my next meal. And there are those few who dig holes and don't cover them back up, leading others to believe that what we leave after we detect is a mess of holes. I saw that recently at a park that I went to, and they also left the trash!
