Although, would graphite pick up on a detector? The more I wrap my head around it, the more it baffles me lol. It's fairly light for its size.
 

I can't tell you what the substance is, but it looks like a broken core sample. Where I live the mining companies drill these core samples out of the mountains to determine the locations of the ores they are looking for. I do not know if graphite is something that is mined or if a detector would pick it up. Sorry...

Thanks guys! That seems to be the general consensus what you both said, but given the area that I found it, gonna go with battery core.
