Finally went to an abandoned farmhouse that I received permission to hunt. The owner lives down the hill in a newer house but keeps the old homeplace mowed. I've only got about half of the yard covered so far. The finds; 6 wheats '12D, two '44Ds, '53D, '55D, '58D, 4 copper memorials, a cald dime and quarter and a star charm marked sterling on the back. The most interesting find of the day was a love token type pin made from a silver quarter. It still has the reeded edge. I did a little online research last night and discovered that the owner had a great grandmother (born 1856 died 1921) who's name matches the token. Since the farm has been in the family for several generations I'm almost positive it was hers. I plan on swinging by his house tonight and giving it to him.

That is cool! Every piece that comes out of the ground has a story. Rarely do we learn what it is. Will you give the token to the family? I guess I should read a little more closely... :-[

The only way I get close to wheat and silver is by eating breakfast cereal with one of the "good spoons". :)

Nice finds. Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the yard produces.

Wow what a great find. Can't wait to hear if there is any story behind it.

Kudos to you for returning it.

thats the right thing to do giving that love token back to the family. not only will it feel good to do it, but ill bet the family will feel pretty good about having you detecting thier yard as well! now coins on the other hand! ::) they go in my pocket! ;D

I finally caught him last night to give him the token. He was thrilled to have it. Even though she died 25 years before he was born he recalled hearing stories about her. He said he can't wait to show it to the rest of the family. He also told me about 3 more places that he'd secured permission for me to hunt. One is a standing house circa 1930. The other two are foundations of pre-1900 houses. Keep in mind that he arranged these before he even knew about the token. I sure am happy to have him for a neighbor.

I stopped back by the yard this morning for a quick hunt. I only had about 1 1/2 hours to play. I covered the same part of the yard I hit the other day. I covered it from a different angle and found these.

One more update and then I'll let this post die. I went back to the same part of the yard again today. I spent the whole afternoon working it. I dug every signal above iron. I only found two more coins but I had a pouch full of trash. Next time I'll start on the rest of the yard.

I couldn't tell what kind of quarter it was made from. It was filed smooth on both sides prior to being worked. It was less than half the thickness of a quarter. The size and the reeded edge were the only clues as to what it was. She was born in 1856 and died in 1921. I believe she got married in '84. Those are the only clues I can give as to it's age.
