You think that sounds better?

Amateur archeologist makes sense to me, taking each word by definition. Of course, there can be a lot of discrepancies in the usage. Most metal detectorists don’t find an artifact, then spend months sorting the area out, one layer at-a-time with a toothbrush. Cataloging every spoonful.

I have a 1930s book, “Digging in the Southwest” by Ann Axtel Morris, archaeologist and wife of archaeologist Earl Morris. Here’s one of her quotes: “Archeology, treasure hunting decently concealed under the respectable cloak of science.” Little has changed in the last hundred years.

I have had training in archaeology on land & underwater. I have helped several states over the years with projects as a volunteer. While I don't have a degree , I consider myself an amateur archaeologist.
