Metal Detecting
I have bought and sold a lot of used and new equipment, and from experience I know it costs $20-$30 to ship the average metal detector anywhere in the United States via United Parcel Service (UPS). What I did not realize, was how much an “Oversized” parcel costs to ship.
Case in point – My used, four-pound, 48” long handled RTG 6” Aluminum Sandscoop.

While I knew I would take a beating on the shipping because it is long, I did not realize it would be $60.00 from New York, to South Carolina. After cashing in my $99.00 USPS money order (Asking price for scoop thinking I would keep around $70) and paying UPS, I got to keep $31.87.
Now, my wallet is assuaged by the fact that “Scooper,” pulled well over $3,000.00 in gold while I owned him and I certainly got my original $145.00 out of him, but my mind is telling me I need to be more careful when figuring shipping costs into my asking price.

Let my mistake be your heads up!

One thing you might want to take note on also, and I have heard this and not experenced. When shipping your detecotr insured, and it gets lost one must provide proof of purchase price. Something to look into next time shipping a high dollar machine. Thanks for the tip terry.

Thank you for reminding us to determine the shipping cost before pricing an item. The package deliverers have all kinds of extra fees. Whether a package is oversize or not may depend on shipping company &/or if ground or airmail, Some may have extra fees based on if you're on a metro area &/or how far you are from their nearest building. Some might charge more temporarily when fuel prices surge. Some cover the 1st $100 insurance, some don't. Some allow packages to be left outside, but that may require extra insurance. The nearest mailing site will be on their websites. I found a site that helps determine shipping costs for USPS/UPS/FedEx shippingsidekick.com/ Best wishes & HH, George (MN)
