This Flat Button was recovered in South Mississippi on December 29th, 2018. I am trying to come up with what year(s) it was manufactured and am hoping some of you can help.On the Back in the outer band it says "GOLD COLOUR SURFACE", but it also says something on the inside band that I cannot make out at his point. And folks, this is my 1st ever Flat Button!

Thanks, but I really don't want my finds to look "mint", I just like to clean them up enough to ID them...

A general range is 1810 to 1840 or so, with 1830-40 probably being closest.

Thanks, now if someone can only come up some concrete info that locks in the year(s) it was made and I know this might not happen, but it's wroth a shot.

Well the only real clue I have is the way the spelled "colour". More than likely British made, maybe even imported into the Confederacy.

I agree with it more than likely being an imported button for the very same reason...

I brushed it off a little better and looked at thru a variety of different powered Loupes, and underneath where it says "COLOUR", it says "FINE".

That circle/possible seam on the back kind of looks like it could be a 1830's 2 piece button. Is it hollow?

That "circle/possible seam" appears to just be decoration when looked at through my 30X Loupe, and the Button doesn't feel hollow, but that said it is my 1st Flat Button and I am assuming that if it was hollow that I should be able to collapse it a little when squeezing it. I just weighed it and it weighs 5 grams as is, but it is missing a portion of the Shank.

It's good to hear from you Bonepicker, it would be great if you joined us on a hunt again sometime, and even better if you would come up to a meeting sometime and show us some of your great finds... Are you a member of our Facebook group "South Mississippi Relic Team"? If not, feel free to join...

British buttons were imported into the U.S. in the early 1800s. Without a manufacturer’s stamp on the back it is impossible to nail down a precise date but collectors say 1800-1840. Great find

Kind of looked like a seam in the pics, but I wasn't sure.
Flat buttons are fun to find, we normally don't dig a lot down here. My first flat button was a 1812 New York Militia, after that I was hooked on relics.

Good to hear from you as well. I almost went to the last group hunt, but I heard there was going to be a lot of people.
I have hunted those fields before. They are tough, but I have gotten some good stuff out of there. Including the silver cufflink that I am using on tnet for my avatar. :-)

We will definitely have to get together some time. Maybe I can catch a ride with Jay next time he goes up there.

I do not use facebook, but I have checked out your site from time to time to see what you guys are finding..
I can see the pics, but cant read the posts. Guess that's good enough. Just never wanted to get sucked in with an account, etc.

My first impression is this is a one-piece British-made button coat.
I also agree with what everyone here is saying about it dating from 1830 - 1850.
