hello everyone,
If you have been following the past week in a half I have stepped up my coin hunting dramatically. For example in the past year I have maybe searched $300 worth of hand rolled nickels. With-in those hand rolls I have found 2 war nickels. This past week and a half I have been getting coins by the box. I have searched 7 ($700) sealed brinks boxes this week of nickels. The thing is not ONE war silver nickel. Does that seem right. What is the average of these nickels in boxes.
Dimes I am getting the average of one per box which from what I hear is about right.
Pennies I am getting way over average of about 25-45 per box.

Just looking for some input.

Thank You,
Jason

It will probably average out in the long run...
I average 3 war nickels for every $400 worth, but I have had times where I didn't find a war nickel for over $700 consecutively.

I checked $550 in nickles this last week. $450 - $500 was sealed boxes/rolls and the rest was hand rolled. The only war nickle I found was in the hand rolls. Not one in the other machine rolls. I typically get 1 every 1-2 boxes, but, like all things, sometimes you get more, and sometimes less.

Just banged out $700 in nickels myself recently - hand rolled mostly, and not a single war nickel. Also only one S mint mark for pre 1960s in that group. So out of 3000 nickels reviewed I got only 1 old S MINTMARK/ WAR NICKEL. I am averaging about one pre 1960 nickel for every 75 coins reviewed.

I average one war nickel per box, but haven't found one in the last 4 boxes (but did get a 43S out of 10 rolls last week).

The only one I have found was in the first $10 I searched,. but I havent gone through too much, maybe $100 total

Excuse me, can you please explain to a newcomer.

You buy coinrolls to search them for valuable coins?

Do you then sell the "war nickels" what ever that is?

Is there a vocabulary somewhere to translate your expressions...like "war nickel" "indian head " "wheat" Franklin and so on????

Thanks

I can see from your profile you live in Denmark. Our coin slang has been around a long time is just natural for us and I can see how it might confuse someone from another country OR someone from here that is not interested in coins. When I talk coins to my wife she just nods and grins, she has no idea what I am talking about. (she is not interested in coins AND she grew up on the other side of the Pacific)

Let me try to answer your questions.

Yes, American coins have not changed size in over 100 years so older coins just move around till caught. People who do not know the value of coins just spend them or deposit in their bank.

War nickels (5¢) were made in 1942 - 1945 and have some silver in them right now the silver value is 53¢

indian head = one cent coin from late 1880 to early 1900's

wheat cent = one cent coin starting in 1909 and still being made till 1959

Franklin = half dollar coin made in the 1940s thru 1963

There are so many coins and all have one or more un-official names

You might be able to CRH yourself. It has been quite a while since I have been in Denmark but I know a 1964 5 Kroner is silver along with a 1967 10 Kroner. If coins that size are in circulation you might be able to fine some too.

For me it seems that I get 2 war nickels out of evey 3 boxes. Better than 1/2 the time but not everytime.
