Where are the best results when hunting a beach???

This question has probably been asked before, but here it goes again. Where is the best place to hunt a beach. I have hunted in the dry sand for the last three years now (when we go on vacation) and have come back with pennies, literally. Should I be hunting in the water (I do have a water machine), stay in the dry sand, or hunt where the sea shells are left on the sand (I think this is the low tide mark)?? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

My plan is always hunt the water early in the morning when it is calm and cool.
Later on as the wind and waves pick up, move to the blanket line on the beach.
The only reason I hunt the beach is that I dont want to get into the car with wet shorts.
Or it is just to windy and the water too rough and I need a detecting fix!

It is a lot like fishing ... the objects are where you find them but the odds are better where lots of people have been active.
Someone said there is 6 rings in the water for every one on the beach ... sounds about right.
