Where to get permission to search on "local government" land?

There is a site near me in NC that I would like to get permission to search. It used to be a school house in the early 1900's and is currently listed as owned by the local government. Its currently open field, perfect for detecting. Who exactly can give me permission to hunt on land listed as "local government"?

I would go to the town hall or town garage and see if there is a parks comitioner or head of parks etc. and start there. You should know very quickly if you are going to be welcome by the responces you get. If you see some one mowing or raking a public place you might ask them who the boss is and start there. Cladius.
