I have only found one silver, and I swear it was a new drop of a old coin. i think the key is to find the spots........it's tough to find good hunting spots, cause i don't like asking and talking to people too much, i rather get in and get out... my new idea is just go to the woods.......no-one will bother me there.......I tried research today, went to the local muesum, snapped some photos maps, and photographs.......I'm looking for a map like **MonaLisa** has shown before that shows the old homesteads.....I can't find one. I havent been to the library yet though.

question, when you locate these spots......some of you guys just park and hunt....no permission givin........everytime i find a spot like that, i get asked to leave......by some idiot that doesnt even own the land.....nosey-whatchout people!!! sorry for the grip!!!! but i'm sick of churches, parks, schools......oh freakin....boy a lincoln clad cent......smile so hard my teeth fall out!!!!

I would have to say that the people of the Carolinas can be nice just not to trusting. The excuse I always get is the insurance wont allow it. Truth is, I think, if there is anything there they want to be the one who finds it. It is a greed thing but I guess I am greedy for even buying a detector. I know this because many times while growing up I asked a landowner, can I look for snakes on your land? They never said no. Now if I could hurt myself metel detecting, surely I could catching venomous snakes. I still to this day get permission to hunt snakes on peoples land and even got a NO to detecting from a man that let me hunt snakes. Go figure.

Try going to your local town museum. They often sell copies of old maps for $1 to $5.
I did that then got a large copy made the same size as a current map so I could overlay them which really helped because the streets routes and even their names have changed in the last 150 years.

Good luck

Good point Bdoo....If you get frustrated because there are so many site's that you can actually research on your area than you might want to try this...The Museum's and such....There's place's I've been at Antietam that according to the old map's drawn at the time of the Battle, the road's are no longer there...I look at this and research it every time I go there....Bottom line is do your research and be patient with it....This stuff is not going anywhere anytime soon....try and do it right, don't need all the legal crap weighing you down...HH!!

I'll say this, rejection is disapointing, I was treated like a "treasure hunter" (oh my) last night by the Calvert city coincil when I asked that they sell permits to the Park. (about as close to civil war hunting in Texas as you can get) I'd love to go into detail but it was hurtful, I aint done yet though, I say if its not to conspecuis just hunt it, If its high profile get permmision, If they say "NO" forget it , unless its somthing like Virginia park in Calvert Texas(unhunted with history) Then dont give up till every stone is Unturned

Google earth is an invaluable tool when looking for places to hunt. Have you tried finding old railroad stops? railroad trestles are good spots too that you arent likely to get run out of. Any commercial areas are fair game to me,Ive never been asked to leave. Ive been approached by maintenance guys and security guys and all they ever want to know is if Im finding anything, and about the detector. I was asked to leave a park here in town once by a cop,I emailed the #2 guy here in town at the parks dept. for a clear definition of the laws and how I interpreted them. He emailed me the very next day and said that I was clearly in the right and could hunt that and almost every other park in town. Another really good place is fairgrounds be they old or new. I dig a lot of coins out of old abandoned gas stations, though there are a lot of auto trash targets, can always pick some coins out.

Ditto on the Google Earth idea. I use it ALL the time:)

I have one word for you. "Panoramic maps". Okay that was two words, but, panoramics were used when towns were platted. It gives you the layout just he way the city was actually drawn except in 3D. You can compare those pans to the new satellite imagery to get a feel for where you are.

Laater...

Sometimes the best way to find spots is to go for a hike in the woods...a lot of times I'll find cellar holes and stone walls in the middle of nowhere (a hundred fifty years ago everywhere was the middle of nowhere). Also look for flat areas near streams and lakes where people would have stopped to picnic.

check with the county courthouse. I bought a county plat book that shows all the present day owners and also shows the 1903 maps complete with houses, schools, churches etc. invaluable.

I FIND ITS EASYER TO ASK FORGIVNESS THAN TO ASK PERMISION BUT IAM CRAZZZZY ;)

I just saw an item yesterday that Google Earth is now going to start hosting old maps....they already have a US Map from 1833.

I've only been detecting here in New Jersey since May of this year. I usually go to County Parks, Schools, Playgrounds...stuff like that. I was only asked to leave one place so far and that was a County Park. A County Sheriff ran me out of there. I asked another Sheriff I saw a couple of weeks ago about the County Parks and he did say that technically it is against the law, but that he doesn't have a problem with it and if he saw me detecting he didn't care as long as I was filling my holes (I always do!) He said I wouldn't get arrested at all by anyone, at the most just told to leave.
I just joined the local historical society here in town, a GREAT source of info (you should see the old maps of town they have in this place!) and they told me if I was stopped here in town at a school or park, just say I was doing it for the historical society and show them my id card :)

sorry to start a heated thread.......a best finds entry is going to be slim for me......unless i find it in my backyard.......i just want to keep to myself not bother anyone, i probally wont ever ask to hunt someones property, unless they offer it to me, and i not going to get caught again......i need to start surfing more!

thanks all HH

loads of stealin here. I cannot just stop at a spot for fear of getting a police ride and with my luck I will have stopped at some spot that someone robbed and was unnoticed until I stopped there.

But I sure love the thrill of the hunt, so I am beginning to look further away. And talking to the older folks to find out where the hang outs used to be. I sometimes partyed in the woods so that no one would catch us. That's the places I am trying to find, only from peps in their 60's -80's. Some of the tips were good ones but they have been stip mined and covered now. Perhaps I will get lucky and find one untouched.

It's kinda too bad you don't really want to talk to someone. Old Folks homes seem to be a good wealth of information. So far most has been changed, but I am sure I will come upon something soon.

Good Luck,

Rev

I hope you understood I meant this in context of city owned lands such as store lots with grassy area's.

I fully agree that you should always ask permission period. I am still asking away and my permission rate atm is 3 yes to 16 no. LoL 2 of the 3 yes I already knew them. BUT I think this place and the current theft rate is a reason for the no's.

I do possibly have 4 "yes's" coming on some great spots. The only thing is there is a catch. All are in a same older area, and I think (or atleast I heard) that they are gonna say yes, but they want me to help them load up a bunch of trash in my truck and haul it off. (They will pay the gas, trash fee). I don't mind this deal at all. They are all aging errr full of wisdom peps so I would help them without the MDing really.

I was led to these peps at this place by a elderly fellow I met at our retirement home here. He made a call to one of them and it looks like I might get 4 great sites now.

As a bonus spending about 1 hour to 2 hours 2 to 3 times a weeks at the nursing home is pretty cool. Lots of peps have been happy to see me and I enjoy seeing them. Kinda feel bad that I am there asking for MDing information, but it all works out in the end. We have some great conversations and I learn a great deal more than just MDing sites.

So please if you all get a chance and you run out of spots...hey... go to the local nursing home and just tell them the truth. Tell they you are a metal detector and you want to know how it used to be around your area, where did they used to hang out with all their ladies when they were teenagers..etc. You will make them very happy by giving them company. Now it only works if you are the kind of person who can genuinly enjoy having a good talk with people. If you are impatient etc..please don't do it. IT will be a disaster. But if you enjoy a good conversation with peps with years of wisdom then you might just find yourself having a great time. I know I do.

And yes most rest homes I have visited through the years had many many peps whose minds worked great and being physically challenged plus lack of funds have put them there. OF course I was not a MDer back when I used to visit. I just enjoyed listening and talking.

Remember though no one should really detect without permission. And even with permission doing so with a flashlight at night (Unless you really really know them) I am sure will cast suspicion on what you are doing. And if a wrong word is said, we all know how fast things get out.

Either way, I saw a great lot of ideas in addition to what I do. Google Earth, Historic Society , Library. Or just plain a walk in the woods and looking for the odd and unusual. Trees not native, Lillies in the middle of the woods, sink holes that look like places that might have been made to desposit trash, flat areas that look man made.

I hope you and all of us can continue to find places that give us opportunity. I have not found that spot that really struck the silver like some of the great spots I have seen here. But we all know private yards and other spots long forgotten are out there. ANd they cannot have all be found or detected yet. Perhaps our "Big Score" is waiting. If not I just plain enjoy detecting.

I know if I try to detect for profit I will most certainly lose LoL. But I do so out of enjoyment, so if I happen to profit someday (my daughter rather all goes to her future) the awesome.

Good luck once again.
