which detector best for gold?

Most companies make gold specific detectors. Usually they are a higher frequency.

It all depends on the kind of gold in your area, and how much you are willing to spend for your time.

PI machines are great for deep nuggets, but will cost you a bit more. You can stay sub $1000 and get a VLF at a high kHz and find smaller gold.

Another thing to take into consideration is the ground matrix. Higher frequencies are generally touted as being better for finding small gold.. but they're also generally affected by mineralization to a greater degree, sometimes to the extent of being inoperable. ..Willy.

Well said Willy.

And of course, if someone looked hard enough they'd find that an older Compass au 2000 has both a high frequency (52 Khz) for finding smaller nuggets in gentler soil, and a 13.77 Khz for finding larger nuggets in bad soil. It is also a very good coin/relic hunter.

I see them on E-Bay once in awhile. They don't last long.

What about the ...Minelab Eureka Gold.. It has 3 Switchable Frequency's... 6.4...20...and 60..kHz that sounds like it covers it what is the thoughts on the Minelab eureka????????????? ==Jim==

I had one of those Eureka Golds in my hand the other day Roach. I tried the different frequencies, and quite frankly I thought "this is a joke"! 8"-9" on a dime in air? Heck, an Ace 250 will do that.

I wondered if I was supposed to change coils or something? The people who showed it to me thought it worked pretty good. I thought it sucked.

It got really poor depth in air, less than a Silver uMax, less than an M-6, or MXT. I wouldn't even pay $300 for it.. In the ground it was even worse. It was a real disappointment and didn't like electrical interference at all..

I hope this helps. HH

Timmer,

The Tesoro Lobo super traq is designed for prospecting / gold hunting. It has a expanded ground tracking system that is computer controlled. As with all Tesoro's it has a lifetime warranty If I can help you further please PM me. Joe

roachnjim,

Here's my take on the Tesoro Lobo's usefullness as a coin machine: I don't sell the Lobo as a coin machine because it lacks the whistles and bells that most people want in a high priced coinshooter. It does not have any sort of target ID, either visual or audio, no digital readout, and it comes with a oversize 10" elliptical coil. O.K., here is the plus side of using it as a coinshooter: It goes deep, it has the ability with the Super Traq computerized ground tracking system to work in ground conditions that would defeat other detectors,
you can body mount it, it uses Tesoro's famous discrimination circuitry, and you can purchase a smaller coil for it.
Those are the facts about that detector as I see it. Joe

P.S. Lifetime warranty !
