I bought a $39.99 metal detector from Harbor Freight Tools to get me started and I think its time for an upgrade now. I have lurked on here for a few weeks and I believe I will buy one of these detectors for around $220. Which one would you buy? Thanks.

We have both the ACE 250 and the Silver uMax. My wife out digs me all the time with her silver because I'm all the time looking at the ACE's screen. And like has been mentioned you can't beat Tesoros warranty

I have a White's Prizm III which is about $250 and I have found, while MDing, as much with my eyes as I have with the MDer.

Yer one of those "lucky" people then...

You'll do well with a metal detector. It will improve your ability.

I don't care who you are, or what you do. You just can't beat a lucky person!

I got my Silver Umax yesterday,(Thanks DetectorDepot.com) it looks and feels great, swings easily, light as a feather. I am going to try it out tommorow at a local park and then at an old homesite that I was told dated back to 1875 or so. How should I set it at the park and more importantly how should I set it up at the old homesite. I am not 100% clear on how the discriminate and sensitivity settings work or how they effect the detectors performance. Thanks :)

Tesoro silver or the Ace 250. Both are great detectors. I own both brands. I tend to lean toward the Tesoro, however the Ace does have the target i.d. - which should only be used as a guide. In high mineral conditions or lots of iron both will give you trouble with lots of beeps. A small coil is a must if you plan on hunting trashy areas. I cannot stress this enough - unless you are hunting some "clean" yards. Haven't found too many of those yet.

RJ, I run the discrimination on my saber at 1 1/2, maybe 2 just to get rid of some of the foil.

Unfortunately, rings, nickels, and pulltabs are all in the same area of discrimination.

Ladies yellow metal rings are down there with foil... so you gotta make a judgement call.

If you get somewhere with just too much foil, bump the discrimination up a tad to cut down on your digging.
But you will lose opportunity for some jewelry...

I certainly would not turn it any higher if relic hunting! Even old square nails are fun to find in some parts of the country.

You'll have fun learning how much information you can actually get from a single tone Tesoro...

I looked at the silver umax. I notice it and several others dont have an lcd display screen. How important is that to have? I will be using this in Charlottesville Va mainly, but also on the South Jersey beaches.
For that price range, I would get the Radio Shack Discovery 3300.
