bringing this here from another post after realizing it belong here.IT SEEMS TODAYS HUNTING IS A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME. most of the ez targets are gone. almost all todays machines have a readout. i guess only the minelabs explorer have the depth the silver umax does[10x12 coil] while still providing a target id.i am hesitant to go to minelab as i hear they are expensive to begin with ,not rugged and break a lot,and hard to learn and heavy.the new e trac is supposed to be lighter and more user friendly.is also a grand an a half. im confused. i would have a choice of any used models on ebay.and the quattro is just as good too i hear as is an explorer with diff name.use same tech.which explorer is best. bet. yes i would buy the e trac IF ITS THAT GOOD. ALSO DO ALL the explorers have auto ground balance. i hate manual ground balance and refuse to own a machine that requires it

Hi Scrounger, there isnt much difference in depth or performance between all models. The later models SE and E Trac are quicker on recovery and easier to pinpoint. They are all automatic ground balance, The Explorer 2 is definately a vast improvement on the original XS model. If just starting out and not wanting to spend a great deal of money, look for a good secondhand Explorer2 you will be pleased with its performance, just remember to take your time and learn the machine .good hunting seeya Neilo

Scrounger if cash and weight are an issue look at the Exterra 70. It's a good machine. Price isn't too bad either.

I have an Explorer II and love it. Heavy little sucker but I still like it.

I think the E-trac will turn out to be a good machine, and the SE and SE PRO are great machines. If you are going to pick up an SE make sure you get the pro coil to go with it.

I agree the X-70 is a sweet detector but......
Since I traded my X-70 for a Explorer ll I noticed my coin finds are considerbly deeper...Maybe the FBS technology? I also noticed my arm gets tired a lot faster too!
HA HA! Actually that's not funny at all. >:(

The X-70 finds coins deep enough for me. A little over 7" on a quarter yesterday.

It was only mentioned once and you might have missed it. Be sure to get the "Pro" coil. They put out the SE Pro just before the E-Trac came out. What made it a 'pro' was the new coil. For a few months there were an amazing amount of positive posts about how much better the pro coil worked. People claimed it was deeper, faster, and pin pointed better. Lots of claims about that so there is some truth to it. On my SE I immediately took off the stock coil and went to a SunRay 8" coil. That and an X-1 probe made the learning curve much easier. I now have an E-Trac. It has the pro coil. It is so easy to use. With the new processor in the E-Trac, the null time is significantly reduced. I'm not savvy enough to know, but in other posts it seems it will pick out a coin with iron very near it. Ignores the iron and beeps a coin. Set it in coin factory presets and hunt. There are a few mods you can make to that setting and, again, many claim lots of finds that are deep and in hunted out areas. It comes with a USB port and cord so you can upload program settings from othe folks that have tuned it to work in certain conditions. It's only money and you only go around one time. Regards...Jim

My deepest with the X-70 was a seated dime at 10" in a bean field. Measured with my digging tool. I was using the 3kHz. coil. The dime came in nice and clear.
