Whites DFX question

Does the Whites DFX give false signals, or wrong item signals? Sometimes my Bounty Hunter will mess up, telling me I found like a penny, (Zinc) and when I pull it up, it's a nail, but it detects as Iron after it comes out of the ground. Does the DFX do the same? or is it pretty solid on detections?

The DFX will false as will all detectors. It depends on how hot you're running it.

I've found several things to help that out. First off turn Icons off. Rely solely on the VDI number. Icons only slow down the rest of the display. To get a more accurate VDI reading pinpoint the target, turn pinpoint off & sweep the dead center of it. Sometimes if your sweep is a little bit off & you hit the edge of the target you'll get a false reading. If you turn D.C. Phase on you can get a VDI reading in the upper right corner of the display. It won't be the exact number that you get with the normal VDI but after awhile you'll be able to tell if it's good or bad. The best way to get that reading is to move the coil away from the target, squeeze the pinpoint trigger & while holding it in slide the coil back over the target, pinpoint & read what VDI is on the upper right of the display. That'll insure that you won't be reading too much of the ground.

Finally look at the bars on your display. If they're smearing with some bars in the negative side it's probably junk. Most good targets will have only one or two bars or even three but they'll be grouped tight.

Be advised that the most accurate discriminator is your digging tool. If it's deep & you're unsure what it is, dig it! If it's shallow but giving you a trash VDI but the bars on the display are tightly grouped, dig it. It could be a gold ring.

Everything depends on your "trash tolerance". The times I came home with an apron full of junk are the times I found jewelry. There are many trash items that mimic desireable items almost perfectly. There's no getting around that.

I discriminate little, usually accepting down to -80, & use Tone ID, VDI & the bars on the display to do my discriminating. A glance at the display will verify what my ears heard & the D.C. phase while pinpointing will further verify it. I still dig lots of junk, especially if it's deep.

Sarge put it well. But I prefer to use the signagraph to ID the target before the VDI numbers.

I find that iron ID is pretty good, unlike my old GTI 2500 which often was fooled.

Yep. I like to use the Signagraph myself. My DFX will give false readings mainly on small rusty pieces of iron such as deep bent nails. Straight nails aren't as much of a problem because if you sweep from a different direction it indicates that it's junk. Even though the VDI & Tone ID will read as a good signal the Signagraph will show some smearing & bars that shouldn't be there if it was really a good target.

I believe in using every feature available to ID a target but even so, regardless what the detector is telling me I'll still dig a deep target. I've been pleasantly surprised many times. It's also an indication as to what the area was used for back then. I love to find a pile of old rusty bottle caps at 6" & deeper in a small area. I at least know there was heavy usage at one time & after clearing out the offending targets there's a chance to find coins that were being hidden by trash. It also keeps away the less industrious MDer. More for me.
