Who Shot George?

Just did recon on a new wooded site. It is Town Property with plenty of stone walls and dirt roads/trails. I also chanced upon a couple of stone encircled fire rings. This first time out I found a 1946 GW Quarter that met its demise from gun slinging coin assassin! :sad5:

But silver is still silver! :hello2:

I guess the damage wouldn't have been from a lawnmower? We dig up many lawnmower damaged coins here in the parks in Arizona. Just a thought.

Nope, found lots of shot coins. They were a popular target in the WWII period & just after, not sure how they 'set them up'.

I would just put Mr. George between two parts of a paper towel and stick him in the vice to straighten him out. I do this all the time with my bent coins or tokens. Works real well.

Definitely a shot coin. Here is a close-up showing the impression made by the bullet at impact.

Good question, CRUSADER! Whatever they did it must have been hard to find them again afterwards. Hopefully it wasn't balanced on someone's head.

Thanks, against the wind! Back then silver coins were common, therefore no big deal.

Very odd that someone would shoot a silver quarter, that was like throwing away several dollars back then.

Much better than a flat one any day.

For years I've always wished that I could find a "shot" silver in the wild. . . last October I got my wish when I found a 1946 George with a bullet hole so I guess that makes our quarter's twins :icon_thumleft:

Sweet find!! Always wanted to find a shot silver and a flattened silver, got a flattened silver, now looking for a shot silver.
The first silver coin the kid ever found was a silver quarter that was shot.
I did find an older token that looked like it was shot with a bb gun.
Congrats on a bucket lister for me!!
