On my Thursday hunt I got this 1964 Kennedy half. It was a really nice coin until some yutz drilled a hole right through the middle!

Still silver though. Congrats.

LOL - So does that make it an 80% 1964? ::)

That sux, I found a few half's with holes in them but none were silver...

i have one almost identical to the one you have. brothers maybe? when i first saw it i wondered why some dillweed would drill a hole in a perfectly good '64...then it hit me. it was probably done in '64 or shortly thereafter when they were still quite common. still...it's in my pile now, safe from any future harm....except for maybe a melting pot down the road. it's not good for anything else.

as the french say, "c'est la vie!"

Not sure why they would drill the hole in the middle. I found a 1976 Ike dollar with a hole on the top which would be for a necklace, but not sure why in the middle.

Also does anyone know how to tell the difference between a proof 76s and a silver 76s. This one i am not sure which one it is. I am thinking silver due to someone making it into a necklace, but maybe not.

Thanks,
jason

My guess is that the person was trying to make a coin ring and screwed up by drilling the center first. Once they realized it they just put it back in circulation. Does the coin still have the reeds?

Jason,

The 76-S came in four varieties. Two CuNi clad varieties in Proof only and One Silver Clad in Proof and One Silver Clad in Regular Strike. If the edge is silver then you need to look for a mirror finish for a Proof. If it is not a mirrored finish then it is a Silver Clad Regular Strike.

Likely a foiled Coin Ring attempt- wonder why they didn't continue and experiment. When I first started this madness- I remember my very first skunk box. The only thing interesting in it was a half with a hole in it- I promptly put it on my keyring as that is what it was made for. Either last month or the one before I was able to retire that one cause I found a better one. Here's a pic. HH Mark

good job stripe! i always figured necklaces but i think you are onto something there.

those 64's with the holes dead center ??? still puzzle me though.

hey stripe, did you ever get a good ring out of that process? i read the thread and went to the pdf page and :icon_study: the instructions. if you succeeded let me know. i have a couple of quarters i wouldn't mind sacrificing in the name of art...plus i think those rings are pretty cool.

thanks.

I haven't taken the time to try it yet- thought it would be a good winter project but last winter I was doing 6 boxes every day, Sunday too so didn't leave time for playing. Here's another link to a one sided coin ring.

Post a pic when you get one made, maybe it will spur ME to try my hand at it too. HH Mark

Yes, the reeds are still there.

looks like a coin ring attempt...

I'm going to bravely post this with the hope that I don't get crucified for 'wrecking' a barber quarter...

for some reason while roll hunting finding coins means a lot to me, but if its a purchased coin for a few bucks I don't mind drilling it. I only drill purchased coins, never hunted...

these are my first few attempts, I've gotten better at making rings, more lazy at taking pictures.

Thanks for posting. Looks like the quarter is the right size to use- too bad I've only found 1 haha. The large cent looks good too- I think I got one of them. Now just need the tools. HH Mark

i got a 1972 Kennedy half from Wal-Mart that was a little dented on the rim so i drilled a little hole in it and put it on my keyring.
