This one has baffled an entire crew of smart fellas at the National Park and even one local mayor, now I ask of thee oh oh great Oracle of all Knowledge known as the internet. What is this strange contraption that I found in the same pastures that I found part of a cannon ball and several other strange items of old?

It's sorta kinda like a small headlight bucket... or old motorcycle tach/speedo bucket.

I just can't subscribe to the headlight theory for several reasons.
For starters you can see it has 4 posts that appear to be for connecting wires on the outside, and the inside has a sort of insulating thing with what look like pickups for some of armature. I'm wondering if it was some type of equipment related to old telegraph, telephone, or power lines?

Could be, or maybe it was one light, or something else, connected to a series of others...

....Detailed pictures would be nice.....first off I thought a 4 cylinder engine magneto.

I too think it could have been some type of distributor cap and it's now in my junk pile, I'm not going to worry that much about it.
