Will I Get In Trouble?

I am from Louisiana and in Oroville California for the next two months on a job. The Yuba River is close to this location. What are the Laws here on just panning in the river? How do I make sure that I am not on a Claim site? Can I run a sluice box in the river? Any help will be appreciated.

BLM?Forest circus (best ones)have land status maps that show colorized info as to whats open and private. As a visitor it's easier to go to recreation sites. many on the Yuba too. BLM website has the info you need-GOOGLE and enjoy. MY favorite is north of Nevada City called Purdone Crosing all the way to edwards crossing.
