winter diggin'

I use an Ames digger which I really like in normal conditions. So, now that the ground is freezing, what do you people use to continue into the winter months?

I went out this morning and had a tough time getting 1.01 in clad and one 1944d wheat. With the sun out, I wasn't cold while I was out but it was very tough digging. The ground was frozen about 2" deep but below that it was easy digging. I want to keep hunting but I need some frozen ground digging tips ???

thanks, Jim

Re: winter diggin'

Been using a Lesche tool. I haven't been able to break or bend it yet. Kinda pricey but worth it. Don't know how it would work in freeze, but probably would cut thru first 2 inches.

Re: winter diggin'

I use what is called a Hori-hori digging tool made in Japan. It is a cross between the lesche digging tool (which I also own but dont care for as much as the HH), and a knife.

This is what happens when you use them in 20 degree weather in semi frozen ground.... But i managed to snag a 1942 walking liberty half out of the deal so I'm doing OK... :D

Re: winter diggin'

Try to hunt areas with leafy ground cover...wooded areas.
A little insulation goes a long ways.
Also , on sunny days...concentrate on southern slopes ....they are the first to thaw.

SlipperyJack wrote in an early post that blasting caps work just fine.

I own a sign shop and install signs year round. There is no easy cure for frozen ground. As mentioned earlier, woods and leafy cover are your best bet.

Thanks all. I think I'll try some wooded areas this weekend.
