Strike anywhere matchheads , the tips can be snipped off. Wetted and toothpicked into the rim of a rimfire cartridge as a priming compound substitute.
After drying , then reloading powder and bullet , the case then needs to be turned to allow the pin to strike an undamaged part of the rim.( Yes there were/are proper/better priming compounds. But tough times or scarce resources can inspire makin do. )
That hints of loading the round by hand into the chamber , vs using a tube feed or magazine.
Does not mean it had to be a single shot. But a single might be easier to index the round where you want it struck.
