Yes. It is military but yours seems to be missing the reinforcement straps. They hold four metal "cans" of ammo. Could be WWII up to Vietnam War era.

That's the first time I've seen one of those. Don't recall ever seeing one even in a surplus store. Can't be before WWII, there weren't any .30 carbines before that.
I have a well built WWII ammo box, stripped the green paint off, and the darn thing is made of really beautiful walnut.

Thot box contained Ammo cans that held the bullets. The Army still uses them. I enlisted in 1977 and we used them back then. This style did not require reinforcement straps since ammo cans inside provided the support.

The ammo crate came from Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Missouri. The lot number of the ammo will give a general clue of the year made. Your lot number looks to be 50-126. My .30 carbine ammo crate is Lot 50-197 and contained 1971 dated ammo. I would guess your crate is from 1970 or 1971.
