Wooden whiskey jug???

I found this at a yard sale the other day and the person I was with told me it was on old whiskey jug. Can anyone confirm this? I can't find anything on the internet that resembles this. Also what is it worth?

more likely a metal can shrouded in wood. probably meant for kerosene
