So, lady at our service desk calls me in this morning, had some "weird coins". Someone spent metal rounds as quarters. They were the same size but stuck to the magnet. Blank too, so sadly they got past the cashier and the person checking at night too. I did notice another one though, pointed it out and she said it was Canadian. It wasn't Canadian, but rather a nice Caribbean Quarter, recognized the emblem from their cents. I told her to keep it out, I'd buy it from the drawer. At this point, she asked if I'd be interested in something else weird that came through too:

1975, 1995x2 and a 2005. Love the fact that the cashier checked them with the pen too, naive teens... Good way to start my work day! She did say she bought a star $5 bill off the drawer the week prior though. There was a "counterfeit" scare at another store a month or so ago, they included a pic, it was a $20 silver certificate, from Chicago... I told the people at my store if they notice any weird money to let me know from here on out. Here's hoping!

I love the fact that $2 bills are considered "weird". It's odd to me that people pay over face value for the seldom scene bill. My bank has them for whoever asks. Very commonly requested during the holidays.

If the US eliminated the $1 FRN and relied on the coin that is produced anyway, there likely would be more acceptance/use of the $2 FRN.

Banks around me (Massachusetts) regularly obtain hundreds of new $2 bills around the holiday season.

The explanation they gave me was that Chinese customers regularly request them to use as gifts as they consider them to be good luck. Also, it's important that the bills be new.

I get $2 bills all year long to use as part of tips I leave at bars and restaurants. I also use big (Eisenhower) dollars. I never fail to get a reaction.
