Working with some Sheds

Well the weather is nice so I am back outside makein some stuff...Still very early tho..but I thought I would share..

All and all it took me like 90mins to get this far.I.E Making flakes..scoreing then starting the cuts.

4th down...I use mainly flakes for the scoreing & the first cuts,But I will be makeing saws and such very soon....But over the winter,my calluses went away...lol SoI have to go slow at first...

please keep up posts on these thread and ad some of the tools to the photo with the shede you are working on,,really enjoy what you have shown so far.. is it to late to find some shedes this year and if not could you suggest certain type of place to look. i am not a deer hunter, and have never seen a deer shede in the woods, yes there are deer around me have seen them from my house. if it is to late couldyou give me date to start and stop hunting them next year, appro. date!! i live in central highland rim area of east Tennessee.. Knife handle on the left,billet on the right.

The tool kit so for,I fave to finish the billet...I could really use one..lol

This big one is gonna kill me ...lol

Hey, thanks for those links, it's really interesting. but you knew I was gonna ask some questions, right? Are you just learning as you go, how much of what you apply is from what you have read or just learned? and I thought the polish on the celts, axes, ect, came from use, no? they were polished before they were used? Thanks for taking the time to document what you are doing, and I take back my caveman callous remark. do you think they wrapped thier hands with leather?

Yeah I just learn as I go,I try to put my modern mind to it,we have the same tools so I had at it...lol

The stuff I made out out slate were just a dabble to see if & how it could be worked....

So, how different could the modern mind and the ancient mind be, when it comes to basic tools? primitave or otherwise? This interests me I work with my hands, sometimes i make tools for what suits my purpose, so I find your experiments enlightening. I don't just want to know the ID of what I find, I want to know how, why, and what. again, thanks for sharing

Just that I know why rubbing stick together can make fire...Friction..Stuff like that...They knew the how just not the why.
While I was cutting the tines,I thought it would be easier with a wire saw.(2 rings with a wire inbetween.So I wonder if your could take some sinew and fine sand and mix them to make a cord with sand in it for sawing..Same kinda items,diff. way of useing them..Hope that makes sense.

i like the way you think why not sinew and sand, some of them used sand and a piece of river cane to drill holes in some things! so i have heard people say, and i have seen photos of holes starded and stoped with a nipple in center, just like it would be left if modern core drill was used!!! nice work, thought you would like to compare your work to the ancient ones work,lol These I dug from a midden on a hernando/woodland site along a river down here. I found all these antler pieces together in a pile and found the worked piece about 1 ft from the pile. I also have found numerous antler handles and socketed antler tips here
