World’s Oldest Intact Shipwreck Found - 2,400 Year Old ‘Ship of Odysseus’

Off the coast of Bulgaria, more than a mile beneath the surface of the Black Sea, a team of maritime archaeologists, scientists and surveyors has discovered what could be the world’s oldest intact shipwreck – a 75-foot-long Greek trading vessel carbon-dated to more than 2,400 years ago.

The Trojan War occurred ca 1200 BCE, around 800 years before this ship sank. What they mean is that this one looks like ships depicted on Greek pottery made when Odysseus journey was already an ancient legend.

Long time ago (as lifetimes go), I got a book, "Deep Water Ancient Ship, The Treasure Vault of the Mediterranean", by Willard Bascom (1976).

Bascom was an engineer, adventurer and scientist, as well as a writer, photographer, painter, miner, cinematographer, and archeologist, who first proposed using Neoprene for wetsuits (!). His Wikipedia page could stand some updating as it looks rather more modest than his many accomplishments.

He also was a pioneer in the idea that the Black Sea could hold shipwrecks that may be in fantastic shape because of the cold temperatures and anoxic conditions. The challenge was then, the deep water. He developed the Alcoa Seaprobe, for deep water exploration as it was then.

Although he died in 2000, he would sure come back to life to see this great find! We stand on the shoulders of Giants!

Yes, that is good... but let me post some a treasure hunter gave me, his wife is from Bulgaria. My old website which is a small one people hardly use anymore (just like a few other smaller treasure huting websites) he made a big long thread on Thracian history in Bulgaria. They resisted the Romans so much, the fierce Thracian worriors ended up as entertainment fighters for them.

To give you a clue as how ancient of roots the Thracian had, they had a type of Stonehenge and gold artifacts very decorated, large size, very ornate relating to their religion.

The Romans looted, destroyed, built over the largest most significant Thracian site in Bulgaria. The archaeologists were still able to recover enough gold artifacts from other small sites.

It probably isn't likely you would find a ship in the Black Sea, with looted Thracian gold artifacts, but if there were it would be a huge gold discovery.
