What your grandson has there is the Philly (no mintmark) large date/small date varieties. The one on the scale is primarily zinc. In 1982, they used 2 different plantchets. The one will be primarily copper and weigh 3.11 g. The copper plated zinc will weigh 2.5 g. The ones that are primarily copper will have the inherent bullion value of the copper content. The zincolns will be worth a cent.
From a numismatic point of view, they are readily available and don't carry any additional premium. Have your grandson to continue to check his change and only bother setting aside the highest quality examples. In mint state, collectors will look to keep a Philly copper large date/small date, a Denver copper large date/small date, a Philly zincoln large date/small date, and a Denver zincoln large date/small date. Not counting the proof, there will be 8 varieties for your grandson to keep his eye out for.
