Wow! 1870 Canada Dime, Silver Colored Crotel Bell, IHs, V nickel, Merc, Navy Button!

This 4.5 hour hunt was amazing. Hit a permission site in Upper New York State (near the Canadian border) this morning that was near Lake Champlain. It was really hard with all of the nails and trash, but a combination of the AT Pro with 5x8 coil and eTrac with standard coil was unbeatable. I think my favorite find was the 1870 Canadian dime, mainly because of the condition. I thought the silver (colored) crotal bell was actual silver, but it just tested negative for silver. Is it tin and pewter? However, the elk rivet (yes, not a pin, but a rivet) tested positive for silver. What was that used for? Also, any thoughts on the Navy button? I shall look it up in Albert's book.

Everything that popped out of the ground was in such great shape; it was a front yard of a mid-1800's house, so, no fertilizer to eat away the copper/nickel.

Great finds. That Vicky dime is in amazing shape and by far my favourite find there. Looks like it is the "wide 0" variety which is more valuable. You could have easy have a $100 to $200 dollar coin find right there! [emoji2]

I don't know a lot about early Canadian coinage, but that dime is something else. Under a loupe, one can make out micro-scratches from being in the ground, so it may knock it down from being a VF-EF, but a solid F. I have found several Canadians tokens in Lake Champlain nearby, the earliest being an 1820 Seated Justice.

Its the fixing on the back which riveted a line of them onto leather. Crotals/Rumblers have loops which attached to the neck of the animal.

Try this link and compare yours to a close match on grade. It isn't always about scratches etc. on the old Canada coins but denomination and individual year/ weak strike scarcity and remaining detail on the head etc. This site should help on a lot of old Canadian coins you find...

From my quick comparisons I'd say in the $100-$150 range which is awesome as far as I'm concerned. Great find and hope I find another Vicky silver sometime soon. It's been awhile! [emoji106]
