Whoa.. you thought the MXT is crap and maybe still have some doubt?
There are 6 major search programs for the MXT. Coins/jewelry, relics, and prospecting in primary search mode... and each has an alternate search mode for the total of six.
I suggest that you look into purchasing the book by Jeff Foster "The MXT Edge" which can take you through each of these modes in detail and highlight the pros and cons of each. Also explained is the ground balancing/salt/lock and proper settings for the gain and discrimination and when to mess with them.
The White's information is pretty spotty for understanding what is going on with the MXT. Jeff's book helps to clarify when to do what and the interaction and tradeoffs associated in metal detecting, for instance when the "Self Adjusting Threshold" is changing the sounds and why that is occurring... and thus what it means and thus what you are passing the coil over and thus whether to dig or not.
Disclaimer... i am not affiliated with White's not With Jeff Foster in any way . i just think his book is great... some might say there is reduntant information within it and indeed that it true but it prevents the need of turning back to other pages and getting nested in different chapters. Each major section is laid out straight forward from beginning to end and all pertinent information can be found without flipping pages back and forth.
Also there are some steps/techniques that are not listed in the White's information that is pertinent for the MXT.
Follow your heart... it will tell you whether you need the book (or even someone elses) or not.
I have had my MXT now for over 5 years and started out in Arizona detecting mainly in the prospector mode. I had access to the Prescott Nation Forest Preserve 1.25 million acres looking for entwined gold and nuggets.
Near the time that my father was dying, i moved back to Ohio and now use the relic and the coin mode mostly.
The MXT is like having three different detectors and the difference in each of the six modes need to be understood... else treasure is left behind. There are big differences between the relic mode and coin mode... more than just displaying a bullet instead of a half dollar on the display.
Practice is key of course... but instruction is a neat shortcut and eliminates the frustration that a new machine might present to the operator..
I am in no way disparaging you FelinePeachy for my first week with the MXT I worked along side of a guy (Brent in Flagstaff) who used a DFX and he was finding 4 or 5 times the things i was because he knew his machine and i was struggling in my learning with mine. He was digging coins and i was digging pulltabs... etc. I thought the MXT was crap too. It wasn't the machine... it was me!
Those are nice finds you had today. In a year you will look back at your early endeavors and just shake your head... but then that is what experience brings... whether you are computer programmer and are ashamed of your early code, a woodworker who built something early in his/her career, or the dress you you made in 4H in high school.
