Wow! One of my best finds. 17-1800's MA State Seal printing block/plate (?)

I went out around noon today and hit a spot that I pulled a couple of Georgies out of lately. Like a fool I didn't dress for the weather and froze my butt off. I could barely concentrate I was so cold I just threw whatever I found in my backpack. I decided to head home and bundle up. I had about a mile walk so I hid out in the woods for about 15 minutes to warm up. I bundled up and went back out to another spot where I found the Buffalo (1916) and the V-Nickel (1906). When I started cleaning off my finds, what I thought was just a hunk o'junk turned out to be what I believe is Massachusetts State Seal Printing Plate/Block!!! Just awesome, at least to me. I can't find much about it except here: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/pre/presea/sealhis.htm

I lightly washed it and then put a small amount of olive oil on it. If anyone can find any info on it, that would be great.

Great find !

Looks like another variation of those shown in the picture, dated 1870s. Great find ! :icon_thumleft:

Assuming it is a printing plate...

If the image on the stone is raised it's a pad printing plate. You touch the image to a pad of ink and then press it on the paper.

If the image is engraved you have to skim coat the engraving with ink and roll it with the paper.

If its a printing plate I'd be more inclined to think it is a pad plate because most offset printing plates are flexable or round so they can be rolled on to the paper.
