Looks more like a decorative pin than a medal awarded by the military (IMHO)

Concur it's not an official award or decoration, or a least in the US. Might be a sweetheart or patriotic pin/brooch.

I think this is just a decorative brooch. They were sold (vintage era) in various metals with all manner of charms attached to them, like these:

I have a question. It's entirely possible to replace the original charms with something else, so can you be absolutely sure that the stars are original to the brooch? Does the appearance of the metal for the stars match that of the plane?

I believe its one of the many types of Homefront Sweetheart Pins that were popular during WW2, as already mentioned.
