WWII Army Button Cleaning Tips

Hi All. I posted for the first time yesterday, and got such great responses that I went back to a possible 1800's RR depot and found what I think is a US Army button. Awesome shape, but I'd like to try cleaning it so that I can read the script on the back side.

Any problems with a plain water soak? My concern is that soaking it in water may cause problems because it appears to have a "hollow" between the front and back sides.
