My brother's 3 week old X-70 has apparently gone South. Will pickup a quarter at 3" on an air test. That's it!
A penny on the surface hardly provokes a sound. Also a quarter buried at 3" again barely detected with a target ID # of 8. He tried all modes and 3 different coils. I hope his down time is short considering the stories that have been coming out about Minelabs slow repair service. He's thinking about driving to Las Vegas as he's only 265 miles from there.

Was it working good and then went south?

Yes, it was fine at first. About a week ago my Bro. called me asking questions because he couldn't seem to find anything. This isn't his first machine, (detecting for close to 30 years) and he has some primo areas where he lives. He hadn't tested the machine in his test garden except for when it was new. He found some good stuff right away with it. Then he hit a dry spell and he didn't think about it for a couple of days. After the 3rd and 4th day he started to wonder what was going on. Then he did the air test and tested in his garden.

NUMBER #1

PUT IN NEW BATTERIES

THEN PROCEED FROM THERE IN YOUR TESTING
RESET THE MACHINE BACK TOO FACTORY SETTING

Place item on the ground, air test does not take into consideration the earth which is the biggest thing that you have to eliminate to be able to find the good STUFF, thats the reason for the GROUND BALANCE MODE elimination of the EARTH, just like the reason for NOISE CANCEL is the elimination of Electro Magnetic Interfearances ...satellite transmissions, power lines, cell phones, even your pin pointer puts off EMI's

They did not put those features in there for nothing
