What have you had up until now? What are you hunting for? Is that going to eat your entire budget, or will you be able to afford an additional coil?

I have usd older whites and non metered ones, I have nothing to hunt with now(shopping). coins/relic live in the mountains of NC
or I could get a White's IDX for around $160.
it might be an IDX pro, Im going to look at it later today.
which would be best bang for the buck? have $225 and can't choose between the two of them.

In all honesty, the IDX is much older, heavier, but a very capable machine. As much as I like Xterras in general, for the money, considering your budget, I would make sure that the IDX works as it should and buy it if it does.

I am a two year veteran from the 305. My thoughts...
Very nice machine, easy to learn, coins produce usually up to 7" max, there are a lot of chirpy signals if the target is near iron or other trash. I always hunted in all metal and that made the signals much clearer. I also bought the 15" coiltek coil for beaches which was a very good investment. I think in your case, this detector will give you a pleasurable year then it may seem like you're missing out on some things after owning it for a while. Pretty much, I hunted with mine for 2.5 years until I found a pricey diamond ring and bought and Etrac with the money. It will pay for itself if you put the work into it and is very lightweight (just to put that in there)!

I've had a few IDX's and 3- 305's. The 305 is more versatile. The most important thing is the 305 has ground balance. Not to mention volume control, noise cancel, notch disc, lighter in weight, takes half the batteries, as deep as the idx, runs on 2 frequencies depending of coils. For me it would be a simple choice.
