You always have the threshold "humming". It's how you tell when you go over something you may have discriminated out, it'll go silent (nulls) then back to the hum. Sometimes you may feel like digging a "null" just to see what it is. Your choice.
I've never worked out your 2nd question lol, i dig if i feel like whether the threshold comes back shallow or deep, but after so many hairclips (bobbypins) and nails etc, most time i just don't stop swinging for nulls.

Yeah , set the threshold to were it just starts and you can just hear it , that is the best way to find the deep items that are on the edge .
There are some detectors that do run quite but this is not one of them .
