at least they used to be
went to a small old spot that a few people still swim at - I believe that someone I took there last year (not where I went with you Ron)
may be hitting there - I found no drops from this year - the soft sand areas were clean
Old oar lock and old swim buckle pieces found a low tide out at my limit
work for 2 hrs with not much to show - started to head in and headed for an area loaded with rocks - no scooping here
had to drop and fan and pull rocks to get what I did - if I did not wear a mask ...I would not have got the keepers I did
I got into the rocks and pulled old key and brass lipstick case. Got a nice signal - looked down and saw rocks as big as your head.
dropped down and pushed them aside - rechecked - still there. Fanned with my dive boot and looked down - bunch of fist size rocks
- dropped down and removed them and fanned again with my hand. Had to do this 3 more times and then saw large blacken disc
plucked it and turned it over in my fingers - it looked slightly out of round and thought it might be a large silver religious medal.
Gave it a rub and front and back crust of it broke off. I was left with a thin Barber half - I could make out the eagle. Was excited to have at least
pulled a piece of silver and it was a good sign there could be more coins and possibly old gold there. I worked my way around some huge rocks
and about 10 ft away from the halve I got another good target. Once again had to move some large rocks and fan and then dropped
down and got to work again. There were 2 large rocks with only about a 3 inch gap between them - signal was in this gap and I rapidly
handed with my hand - when the sand and silt cleared ...I again saw a large black disc and plucked it from the crevice. Gave a rub and this time
it did not break apart. I rolled it around and lightly rubbed and could once again make out the eagle of a Barber halve. I got a few thin wheat pennies
after that - real tough working - tide was coming in. Did manage a crusty old silver ring too - If I go back - will just jump into the rocks
I believe there are a few more goodies in there

Way to go, Casper! I've yet to find a large Barber coin. Thanks for posting and hope you find some old gold next time out.

Congrats on your finds and nice post

....Wow Casper ! I've got to try rocks at our shoreline.....gives me new hope.
Nice pics , and THANKS !
This is a small spot - was popular like 100 yrs ago
these rocks were probably covered with sand back then - hurricane that devastated a lot of beaches up in 1938
took out a lot of sand that never got replaced - a lot of these spots stopped being popular swim spots around then
usually just locals will hang here and invite friends and relatives - have heard of fresh drops being found here now and then
I live over 2 hrs away to most of spots I hit and usually day late and dollar short on the new stuff - luckily I
can sometimes go to plan B and come up with a keeper or 2
just be careful in rocks - you can break an ankle if your not careful - you can also crack a coil or break a rod if not careful
Ive done both yrs ago

Nice recoveries on the silver Casper!
Wonder if there was sand over the rocks at one time and because of storm erosion only the rocks are remaining?
Just noticed you answered my question before I hit send. Lol
Psychic you are.:)

Is it primarily sand and water that is wasting these coins away ? Does the salt hasten this process ?

Nothing wrong with that

Sweet couple of halves. You really had to work for them. Well done and congratulations.

Boy that one is thin. Too bad but glad you pulled them out. Congrats on the silvers.

This may be a dumb question since I am not a saltwater hunter, but what does one do with silver that looks like that? Is there any value left, as melt? How do you remove the crud?

Nice finds Casper man that coin is thin ....:icon_thumright:

Salt water does a job on most silver - the soil can make a difference too -
I've found coins in salt water with a grey sand and coins came out grey and not crusted
then others get caked where they can be 3 times their thickness
other can be razor thin like merc dime I found last week - it had been moving on bottom and sands moving across it
"rolling stone ...gathers no moss" - moving coin gathers no crust
then others in clam beds get eaten by the clams excrement - gold will come out ok - but it will do a job on silver and copper

I don't sell them - it will just go in my coffee table with the rest - the good, bad and the ugly
thing is
1 - I know there is still good targets in those rocks
2 - they are old - which means there could be old gold in there or other possible old goodies
not a lot of area - but if I'm in the neighborhood - might be worth at least one more check

it probably has as much silver left to make a quarter - so worth 1/4 of the price of silver (little less actually being .900)
so they still have melt value - mine all get thrown in my coffee table display at the end of each year

Nicely done!! Congrats on recovering those big silver half dollars and the silver ring. Hh

Congrats on the skinny silvers. Good thing you found them before they disappeared

That is insane how you recovered those goodies

I wish I had a video - especially on the 2nd one - was in shallow water but you would have thought I was on a wreck site the way I
fanned it out and plucked it from its crevice
