Ok figured I would post this here and on todays finds, as I did find it just not with a md. Ok went to pawn shop that I have never been in out of town and walked in to look and see if they had any coins. To my suprise they did have a few, so I looked around picked through some odd and end pieces of junk and he had the 65,66, sms sets so I asked how much he wanted for them both and he said $25. I thought to myself that a little high but still asked if I could see them, lookedat the 66 to see if the COA was there and it was. Then looked at the 65 at to my suprise I saw an ERROR my heart almost stopped beating. :o :o I told the man I will take them both. So on my merry way I went, when I got home I picked up the cherry pickers guide to errors, and guess what no such error on a 65 exsits, nor could I find one on ebay or the internet. Hell I collect coins and have been for 5 years now and dont know how this error came about. The Obverse is plain to see an ERROR but the reverse is almost perfect. What do you guys think it is ???

Thanks and HH

Thats definately interesting and worth the money. I think that is considered a strike through grease error. Or something to that effect.

Anyhow, great find. I have collected coins for many years and I wouldn't have passed on it either.

I think this is called a "lamination " error . It happens when gas or dirt gets trapped in the strip as the coin is being rolled out of circulation. It might not be worth very much but still cool as heck.

in a normal coin for curculation not that odd and not worth much agreed --- but in a "proof set" that is supposed to be inspected rare --thus it should not exist in a proof set -- do not break up the "proof set"

I believe that it is a cud. A cud is some type of fouled die. It is a quite frequent occurance on a newer states quarter.

Sweet find.

if it was a fouled die more than likely it would not have the rim around the edge more than likely it was a gas build up between the lams that didnt show until it was out of the mint..... that my 2 cents all in all great find...

It is a strike thru error (if it was a cud it would have a raised area on the coin from the die being broken). Either grease was on the die or a foreign object (cloth or something) got on the planchet when it was struck, thus the indentation and weak appearance of the letters. Relatively common on business strikes, but very uncommon on SMS as those coins are more scrutinized when struck. It will carry a little bit of a premium, especially if you leave it in the packaging. Very nice find.

I appreciate it guys for allthe feedback part of me wants to break it open and send it NGC or PCGS and part of me doesnt. I know they can tell me exactly what it is. Then I could more than likely find a price on this jewel :)

send it intact for grading do not not repeat do not break it out of the package -- thats what makes it "special" -- proof mint sets are supposed to be quality "inspected " thus it should without a doubt not contain an error coin of that nature --those type of errors are not that uncommon on normal coins for curculation but a "proof" set should not have one in it and its a proof grade error coin (still in the package -- so not doubt of its status on that) once you remove it from the package it loses its special statusand becomes just a plain ole error coin (yawn).

DO NOT send it in to PCGS or NGC, they do not grade error coins and will bag it and you will be out the money sent to them. The only one of the three big TPG's that grades error coins is ANACS. Your coin does carry a little bit of a premium, but to be honest I do not think it will be enough to cover your expenses. Your best bet is to do one of two things, hold on to it and take it to a coins show that has error coin dealers, and/or send some pics (those you posted are good enough) to a dealer's website that specializes in error coins and get their take on it. You might be able to get a dealers name from the CONECA website. Right now though I would not spend the money as of yet on having it graded.
